Date: Future
Mileage: ?? miles

      • All Regions but only 70.00.100A version, Working 7/11/24
    • Loaded to a USB key and followed the factory firmware upgrade process to flash the firmware into the car. Took about 30 mins. All good.
    • This firmware update was necessary to support the Android Auto/Apple Carplay upgrade
  • Added Factory Apple Carplay/Android Auto hardware upgrade to the audio system
    • Purchased the Type-C Mazda Apple CarPlay & Android Auto HUB OEM USB Retrofit Kit hardware upgrade
      • For Mazda 2/3/6/CX3 CX5/CX8/CX9/MX5/Miata 2014-2019 with MZD Connect System

Performed by: Stefano and Raymundo

Services Performed: Initial Post Purchase inspection. Raymundo did a great job purchasing an incredibly clean 2-owner full dealer service history California car at below market price! It had lived in San Rafael/Napa (northern Bay area). Here’s what is notable in the first look PPI:

  • Engine bay notable light surface corrosion on all aluminum surfaces. Makes it look a bit shabby. The car must have been living somewhere near the ocean or San Francisco Bay for a period of time. Looks like salt corrosion.
    • In an ideal world would Dry Ice Blast it to make new again.
    • Recommend pressure washing engine bay for now
  • Inspected Powertrain
    • No visible oil leaks
    • Noted that there isn’t a strut tower brace or intake resonator as is supposed to be fitted to the Club version. Removed by DPO?
    • Engine oil at max and looks clean. Matches with the previous owner saying it was just serviced by Mazda.
    • Serpentine belt looks OK
    • Water pump belt looks OK
    • The engine coolant level is OK. Color of coolant is green. After checking that is the correct color for OEM (Mazda FL22)
    • Air Conditioning not working
      • No call for compressor when set to max cool. No clutch engagement. Suspect low/no pressure
      • Connected gauge to low pressure port. Zero pressure. System is empty. Suspect leak.
      • Recommend taking to A/C specialist for further diagnosis
    • Battery is a Duralast (so replaced).
      • Recommend a load test to ensure its in good condition
    • Transmission is showing minor weeping at the rear main seal. For now we cleaned it all off to observe further how severe. Potentially will need a transmission rear main seal replacement.
    • Rear diff – no leaks.
    • Half shaft boots – OK
  • Inspected Exhaust – OK
    • Rear exhaust tips could use a proper polish
  • Inspected Suspension
    • Noted the LF strut dust boot is torn/broken in half. Recommend just ordering the boot and disassembling the strut to replace it vs. replacing the both entire front strut assemblies.
    • Some light surface oxidation and tiny bit of surface rust on a few bits. Nothing that matters.
    • The rest was all OK
  • Inspected Brakes
    • Pads
      • Front Left – 7.5mm (2mm is min thickness)
      • Front Right – 7mm
      • Rear Left – 5.5mm (1.5mm is min thickness)
      • Rear Right – 5.5mm
      • So it looks like the front pads are about 80+% remaining, and the rears about 60+% remaining. All good.
    • Rotors
      • Front Left – 21.9mm (20mm is min thickness)
      • Front Right – 21.9 mm
      • Rear Left – 9.5mm (7.5mm is min thickness)
      • Rear Right – 9.5mm
    • Brake Fluid reservoir is full, but looks a bit yellowed, and age is unknown. Recommend brake fluid flush with DOT4.
  • Inspected Tires and wheels
    • Make of tire is Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ 205/45 R17
      • All four have matching date codes of 3619 (Fall 2019). This is 5+ years old.
      • Looking at the tires it appears they might have been tracked at some point based on the heat marking on outer edges
    • Tread Depth
      • Front Left – 6/32″
      • Front Right -6/32″
      • Rear Left – 6.5/32″
      • Rear Right – 6.5/32″
    • Set tire pressures Front and Rear to 29 psi.
      • No spare, this car is supposed to have run flats.
    • TPMS system
      • This year of MX-5 uses indirect TPMS
      • Reset the TPMS using the dash button.
    • Coated wheel studs with antiseize
    • Torqued wheel nuts to 80 ft-lbs
    • Some notable road rash on the RF rim.
    • Essentially Stefano thinks the tires have about 40% tread depth left (from likely 10/32 new to 3/32 min). These can probably be run for 5K more miles, and perhaps replace in the late fall prior to rainy season. When replaced, suggest run flats and have the tires balanced.
  • Inspected Exterior Lighting – OK
    • Couldn’t figure out how to turn on the front lower fog lights
  • Inspected Exterior
    • Inspected windshield. No cracks or chips.
    • Inspected wipers. OK.
      • Washer fluid level full.
    • Lubricated the drivers door emergency key lock with Lock Lube and tested with emergency key.
    • Right Front splitter damaged and one or two connectors partly pulled out of bumper. Recommend getting new bolts and clips and refastening.
    • Front of right lower door sill loose from body. Inspected, and its broken clips. Recommend getting proper clips and reinstalling properly.
    • Notable 3″ long crease in the upper portion of the right rear quarter panel. A good PDR guy could make it 99% disappear and it might be worth it. Good access from inside rear wheel arch.
    • Multiple door dings near the passenger door handle. A good PDR guy could probably get most of them out depending on access from inside panel.
    • Paint on front bumper isn’t as smooth and glossy as the rest of the car. Based on the Carfax report of front end collision, guessing it was repainted but not to the proper standard.
    • License plates are a little bent/wobbly. Suggest removing, flattening and reinstalling with security screws
    • Soft Top is showing some minor creasing. Might be cured with a bit of steam to release the wrinkles. Not sure what to ‘condition’ a soft top fabric with.
  • Inspected Interior
    • Notable wonky’ness in the rear view mirror glass. Looks like moisture seep. No way to fix other than replace.
    • Media center touch screen has wonky’ness in the lower corners. Looks bad. Like moisture creeping in. No fix other than replacement.
    • Fabric seats have a bit of moldiness look to them. Suggest a thorough upholstery cleaning.
    • Drivers side seat belt now retracting properly. Checked that it wasn’t just tangled. Spring is weak. Recommend removing and sending out to be rebuilt. Potentially change the seat belt colors to match the dark red stitching of the seats.
  • Recommendations for Turo Prep:
    • Pressure wash the engine bay.
    • Have the A/C system vacuum tested to determine the source of the leak and suggest the repair.
      • Stefano’s can replace most of the components if they diagnose them. Use 1-800-Radiator.com for the parts potentially.
      • Have an A/C shop re-test and fill the system
    • Flush the brakes with fresh DOT4 fluid just to reset the clock on when its due
    • Order and replace torn LF strut boot
    • Repair/replace the drivers seat belt system.
      • Recommend removing and sending out to be rebuilt.
      • Potentially change the seat belt colors to match the dark red stitching of the seats.
    • Load test the main battery to make sure still at 100% performance
    • Order and replace the rear view mirror
    • Order and replace the media system touch panel
    • Order and replace the damaged front splitter mounting bolts/clips
    • Order and replace the damaged right side lower sill mounting clips
    • Get a Paintless Dent Specialist to remove the 3″ crease in the RR quarter panel
    • Order security screws for the license plates and remount
    • Change the batteries in both factory key fobs so we know they are fresh
    • Firmware update the cars multimedia system to add factory Apple Car Play/Android Auto including replacing the USB cable accessory port
    • Reset the dash and media system to ‘Factory Reset’ so we purge any fiddling by previous owners
    • Add MooveTrax vehicle tracker
    • Put a laminated set of Insurance Card and Registration in glove box, but redacted to not show addresses.
    • A Faraday pouch to store key in car (for keyless delivery if remote unlock works).
    • Order and install a FastTrak Flex Pass
    • Make sure its clear in the fuel filler area that the car REQUIRES premium fuel. Add label?
    • Could use a full detail to knock a few years of accumulated aging off, including:
      • Exterior
        • Snow Foam and Pressure Wash
        • Clay bar with Clay Luber
        • Machine polish with Chemical Guys 36/38 and orange cutting pads
        • Alcohol wipe down
        • Ceramic Coat paint and plastics
        • Dress the tires with Adams Graphite
        • Polish the stainless dual exhaust tips
        • Soft top steam and conditioner?
      • Interior
        • Vacuum and Vornado of the carpets
        • Bissell carpet cleaning of seats and carpets
        • AMMO Lather and wipe down of all interior panels
        • Some form of Scotchguard treatment to protect the fabric seats
        • Trunk vacuum and tidy
    • Take snazzy Turo photos once all the work is complete
